Ice Hotels

Ice and snow hotels are temporary buildings. Each one is packed and carved from snow and ice at the start of the cold months, stands through a single winter, and is lost to the thaw. The next year another is raised on the same ground, to a plan that has changed. Warm buildings usually stand nearby.

A vaulted corridor cut from snow with carved ice walls

The structure stands at Valcartier, in Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, north-west of Québec City. It shares ground with a large leisure site that the operator keeps working through the year. Across the cold months the ice building holds themed chambers, corridors, a chapel and a bar, while the surrounding site continues its own programme. The approach from the car park is level.

Snow is blown over steel forms to make the vaults, and the forms are drawn out once the mass has set. Ice blocks are cut and carved for furniture, for walls and for the sculpted chambers. Crews of builders and sculptors work through several weeks. In spring the whole structure is left to melt away.

The operator states that the ice building opens for the winter season. Exact dates are announced each year, so the hotel is asked directly. Heated pavilions and a hotel open across the whole year stand on the same site, and those are described as available outside winter too.

Snow walls and towers raised beside a frozen gulf

Kemi lies on the Gulf of Bothnia in Finnish Lapland, and the snow structure is raised each winter beside the harbour front. Its walls enclose sleeping chambers, a restaurant hall and a chapel, all of them cut from snow and ice. The sea ice stretches out past the walls. The site is reached on foot from the town centre.

The castle is built from snow packed against forms and from ice taken locally, with sculptors shaping the inner surfaces. Its plan changes from one winter to the next, so returning visitors meet a different arrangement. Building work runs through the early winter. When the thaw arrives the walls are lost and the ground is cleared.

The operator also keeps a permanent building at the harbour, holding snow and ice indoors well past the winter. It is described as open across a longer part of the year. Season dates for the outdoor castle are published annually and confirmed with the operator.

Snow igloos and glass igloos among pines in northern Finland

Pine forest on both sides of the main road holds the site, at Saariselkä in northern Finnish Lapland. In winter it carries snow igloos alongside timber cabins and glass igloos. Paths between them are cleared by machine. The Urho Kekkonen wilderness begins close by, and the land lies low and open beneath the trees.

Snow igloos are formed from packed snow over frames and finished by hand. They exist only while the cold lasts. The thaw takes them back each spring, and they are made again the following winter. Glass igloos and timber cabins are permanent structures on the same ground and are not rebuilt.

The glass igloos are heated, and the operator says so plainly. The snow igloos are not, and sleeping in them is described in terms of insulated bags and thermal bedding. Dates for the winter season are published by the operator and confirmed before arrival.

A carved snow corridor leading to sleeping chambers

The address is at Sinettä, roughly a half-hour drive west of Rovaniemi, on a lake shore among spruce and pine. Each winter a snow building is raised there. It holds sleeping chambers, a corridor of carved walls, a snow restaurant and ice-lined rooms nearby. Glass igloos and timber housing stand on the same ground, in use for longer.

The snow structure is packed over arched forms and carved once it has hardened. Snow comes from the site and ice is cut from the lake. A local crew builds it through the early winter. It stands while the cold holds and is left to melt when spring reaches the shore.

The operator describes the glass igloos as heated and open across a longer season than the snow building. Saunas and a warm service building sit beside the snow rooms. Opening and closing dates for the winter structure are announced each year and confirmed directly.
